Flip Your Web Pages Easily – Cheap Virtual Curb Appeal That Works

Most website owners are quite content to add some text every now and then to their site and then just rinse and repeat every so often – for years. Don’t do it! Just like we often forget how our home looks to the outside world until it comes time to sell it, we can forget how other people view our virtual homes on the web – our websites.

One of the easiest traps a website owner can fall into is complacency. That is, complacency about how their website looks from a visitor’s point of view. Well if you have fallen victim of that trap then don’t worry. You can easily use a couple of the following tips to rejuvenate your website and get more visitors as a benefit. So let’s flip some web pages!

What The Flip?!
Your site is going to be taken to the next level, not necessarily with video [that’s great, but is a discussion for another day,] but with great content – not just any old content. And pictures – because, how many words are they worth?

To start, go through your stats and find a page that has text on it but you see is not performing as you would like.

Okay. What’s your page about? Make sure your title reflects what it’s about – what are your keywords? The page title needs to be accurate, just like an MLS listing.

Are the paragraphs short, like sound bites? Think of them as sound ‘bytes’ in this case: Short, succinct paragraphs to spruce up your web page. Eyes don’t like to read wide, long blocks of text, so break it up – give the page some white space – get rid of the textual clutter.

Use headings to guide the reader through your web copy, and just like a realtor – leave the best to last. Your master suite with his and hers bathrooms is your closing paragraph, so make it high impact while leaving the reader something to contemplate, an offer of something more, or a direct request to buy!

And now add the pictures, because they are your web page staging weapon. If you are trying to sell something make sure you have some cracking pictures of your product. And do you have a testimonial you can add for good measure? It always helps prospective buyers to know what the ‘neighbors’ think of your piece of virtual real estate.

Make sure you add some “alt” text to your pictures that reflect the content of your page, the keywords you are using should be added there too.

Now images on the web used to cost a lot of money, but that is not the case anymore. You can go to flickr.com and get some great pictures and as long as you attribute the photos to the owners – there are a gazillion pictures you can use for free.

Or if you want to jazz up your pages a little more with a definite professional look, go to istockphoto.com – they are a great resource for adding wonderful stock photography for about a buck a picture. If you have a blog, using those two sites will help spruce up your posts, and then some.

Don’t Let Your Flip Be A Flop!
So now you’ve got your website flipped – it’s time to put a virtual sign out on your lawn and list it on MLS. What that means in reality is that you have to let people know your site is available for viewing and get links back to it. Go to pingomatic.com and ping your site to various services and then follow through with your link building strategy to promote your 24/7/365 open house. You do have a link building strategy, don’t you?…

    Hi Fran
    Very well written article.

  2. Hey Fran. I like the colors of your site! How long have you been in the SEO game? I imagine with phonebook companies losing business you are probably pretty busy, eh?

  3. Hi Chris,

Thanks! I started doing the ‘on page’ SEO for clients quite a long time ago [I have been designing and building websites for 12 years] but a few years ago I started offering more ‘off page’ stuff – with the emergence of all the web 2.0 properties out there, and the traffic building ‘rules’ changing, I felt it was the best thing to do for my clients.

I see you are based in Harrisburg. I a stone’s throw from there for seven years – it sure has changed a lot!

    Best,
    Fran.
